Redesign Your Resolutions

The New Year usually comes with a new start and for many this means a whole new look at home. Redecorating allows you to tear down last years wallpaper and start fresh, but as you begin your redesign you should have your home security in mind. From a big project like installing lights to a small change in your indoor plants, there is always a way you can protect your property with our top five home improvements.

1) Put gravel outside. Gravel should be spread around areas and pathways leading directly to your house. The noise they create when walking over them is a huge deterrent to burglars because they are unable to approach the house unnoticed.

2) Add an outhouse to your garden. Bikes are commonly stolen from back gardens where people assume they are safe. However, it is better to keep them locked up in a shed or summer house which is secure from intrusion. Whether inside or not, they should always be locked to an immovable object that will deter thieves from attempting to move them.

3) Pot some prickly plants. Cacti and succulents are becoming a popular addition to any modern home, appearing in style magazines and online blogs. As well as being an attractive feature, they also work as a deterrent to burglars by planting them around the front of the house or putting them in pots on your windowsill. The spikes mean they cannot be climbed over easily and it would be difficult to enter the property without reacting to a painful encounter.

4) Input some outdoor lighting. It is best to make sure dark and covered areas are well lit so it is difficult to approach your property without being seen. Motion sensor lighting draws more attention to the movement around the property. Burglars are less likely to approach a house if they can be easily seen by neighbours and people passing by who may act as witnesses in the future.

5) Tidy up your trees. A large number of gardens are surrounded by large trees or bushes that can impair your security if they are in the wrong place. They should not cover any entrances or block windows as burglars could approach the property unnoticed. Even in the winter, make time to regularly trim and maintain your garden as this also lets people know the property is frequently occupied and looked after, rather than an empty easy target.
